2023 – More than Words events with Peter Longman

Following a 45-year career in senior roles in arts, crafts, museums and theatre , Peter Longman has developed an interest in studio pottery and built up a collection of over 200 pieces. You can join Peter for a talk about a Clevedon potter at The Theatre Shop and/or visit his home for a presentation and tour of his collection (tickets available via the ‘Tickets’ button on the home page)…

‘Pottering around Clevedon’ The Theatre Shop, Clevedon, BS21 6HX  Wednesday 31st May 2023

William Fishley Holland’s ancestors were among the most respected ‘peasant potters’ in England. In 1921 he set up Clevedon Pottery on Court Lane and ran it for over 40 years. His autobiography ‘50 years a potter‘, published in 1958, includes unique records of his early life and career in Devon, Elton ware, and his time in Clevedon. Peter Longman puts our local hero into a national context and shows examples of his wares.

‘From Mud and Water Man to Moon Jar Lady’: 100 Years of Studio Pottery

Friday 2nd June 2023 2.30pm – 4.30pm / Saturday 3 Jun 2023 10:30am – 12:30pm

Studio pottery was born of the Arts and Crafts Movement as a reaction against mass production, seeking a return to the traditions of the individual maker in their studio.  Peter and his wife Sylvia open their house for a presentation and tour with opportunities to handle selected pieces in his collection.
NB. Bookings for this event must be made in advance.
